The Akoya pearl is named after the oyster species Pinctada fucata martensii, which is native to Japan and China. Despite their popularity at home in Japan and abroad, demand for Akoya pearls plummeted during World War II due to economic instability caused by conflict. Farmers struggled to keep their farms running as many workers were drafted into military service or forced into labor camps.

After WWII ended, there was renewed interest in Akoya pearls as soldiers returned home with tales about those beautiful little white spheres they’d seen while stationed overseas. Interest also grew thanks to new jewelry designs featuring these timeless jewels in contemporary styles.
