To learn more about this trend, we spoke with Julie Smith, a certified gemologist who specializes in colored diamonds.

Q: What exactly is a color-enhanced diamond or gemstone?

A: A color-enhanced diamond or gemstone is one that has been treated to alter its natural color. This can be done through processes such as irradiation, high-pressure/high-temperature treatment (HPHT), or coating.

Q: Why do people choose color-enhanced stones over naturally colored ones?

A: There are several reasons why someone might prefer a color-enhanced stone. For one thing, natural fancy-color diamonds and gemstones can be incredibly rare and expensive. Enhancing the color of a more affordable stone allows buyers to get the look they want without breaking the bank.

Additionally, some people simply prefer brighter colors than what occurs naturally. With enhancements, you can get really intense hues that you wouldn’t find otherwise.

Q: How does irradiation work?

A: Irradiation involves exposing the stone to radiation in order to change its crystal structure and create new colors. This process is commonly used on diamonds and comes in two forms – electron beam (EB) and neutron bombardment (NB).

With EB irradiation, electrons are accelerated toward the diamond at high speeds using an accelerator machine called a linear accelerator (linac). The electrons penetrate the crystal lattice of the diamond and cause defects within it which result in different hues depending on how long it’s exposed for.

On the other hand NB irradiation uses neutrons instead of electrons produced by nuclear reactors which changes nitrogen atoms into boron atoms creating blue colour effect on Diamond crystals

Q: Are there any risks associated with irradiated stones?

A: No, once the treatment is complete there are no residual radioactive materials present in the stone. The process is completely safe.

Q: What about HPHT treatment?

A: HPHT involves subjecting a diamond to high temperature and pressure to alter its color. This can be done through various methods, such as placing the diamond in a chamber filled with an inert gas like nitrogen and then heating it up to 1,500 degrees Celsius while applying pressure at around 60,000 atmospheres.

This treatment can turn brownish diamonds into yellow ones or even create fancy colors like pink or blue that don’t occur naturally.

Q: Is HPHT more expensive than irradiation?

A: Yes, HPHT can be quite costly due to the equipment needed for the process. But because it’s a permanent alteration of the stone’s color rather than just a surface coating (as we’ll discuss later), some people find it worth the investment.

Q: Can you tell us about coated gemstones?

A: Coating involves applying a thin layer of material over a gemstone’s surface to achieve different colors or effects. This technique is commonly used on quartzes and topazes but not on diamonds because their surfaces are harder and difficult to coat

One popular type of coating is called titanium dioxide coating which creates an iridescent effect similar to that seen on opals.

Q: Are there any downsides to buying color-enhanced stones?

A: Well one big downside is that they may not hold their value as well as natural colored diamonds and gemstones. Because enhancements often result in lower-quality stones becoming more colorful, they aren’t generally viewed as being on par with natural fancy-color gems from places like Argyle Mine

Additionally, some treatments may not last forever; coatings especially have been known fade over time or come off with exposure chemicals such soap water etc making them less durable than natural colored stones.

Q: What should buyers look for when shopping for color-enhanced diamonds or gemstones?

A: First of all, make sure you’re buying from a reputable dealer who is transparent about the treatment process. Ask to see certifications and reports that detail how the stone was treated.

Also, keep in mind that some enhancements may not be permanent. For example coatings are less durable than other treatments so it’s important that they don’t come off easily with everyday wear or exposure to chemicals such as soap water etc.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose a stone that you love and feel good about wearing regardless of how it was enhanced. Just make sure you’re informed about what you’re buying before making your final decision

Q: Do you have any tips for caring for color-enhanced stones?

A: Yes! Avoid exposing them to harsh chemicals like bleach or cleaners which can cause damage to both coating and irradiated stones causing them lose their vibrancy over time. Also, avoid ultrasonic jewelry cleaners because high-frequency vibrations can also damage certain types of treatments. Instead use mild soapy water and soft brushes if needed

If possible store them separately from other jewelry pieces as contact with harder materials could scratch or chip the surface coating of softer gems such as topaz or quartzes

Finally always take care where you purchase these gems from since many fake gemstones may be passed off as real ones by unscrupulous dealers looking to make quick money on unsuspecting customers
