Kaleb Zewdu elaborates on this point stating,” In Ethiopia, we find two types of deposits for precious opal- volcanic rocks such as rhyolite or tuff (a type of rock made up primarily of consolidated volcanic ash) and sedimentary rocks such as sandstone.”
Sarah Hughes has been working with Ethiopian Opals for several years now; she explains her attraction towards them saying,” The colors within Ethiopian Opal ranges from white, yellow, orange, reds and greens which make it very versatile when it comes to design”.
When it comes to mining practices, Kaleb explains that Wollo Mining PLC uses a combination of traditional hand-digging methods along with modern equipment like jackhammers and excavators to extract these valuable stones.
He goes on explaining,” At our mines right now, we have about 250 people employed who work tirelessly around-the-clock shifts to extract these opals from the earth.”
The process of mining Ethiopian Opals is not an easy one. As Dr.Teklu explains, “Mining opal is a complex and challenging task because it involves extracting fragile gemstones without damaging them in the process.”
Sarah Hughes agrees with this point stating,” These opals are very delicate and require careful handling throughout the entire process- from mining to cutting and polishing”.
