Freshwater pearls are mainly cultivated using a different technique known as tissue nucleation. Instead of inserting a nucleus into an oyster’s mantle tissue directly, small sections of mantle tissue from another mussel are inserted instead.

The implanted tissue serves as both nucleus and catalyst for nacre production. Over time, this results in the formation of multiple pearls within one mollusk—often referred to as “pearl sacs.” Freshwater pearls can range in shape from round to baroque due to this unique method of cultivation.

Abalone Pearl Cultivation
