To create cultured pearls, a small incision is made in the mantle tissue of an oyster. A tiny bead nucleus, usually made from mother-of-pearl or shell material, along with a small piece of donor mantle tissue is inserted into the incision. This stimulates the oyster’s natural defense mechanism which involves secreting nacre – a combination of calcium carbonate crystals and proteins – around the irritant to form a protective layer known as nacre.
Over time, layer upon layer of nacre accumulates around the nucleus, resulting in a beautiful cultured pearl. The size, shape, color, and quality depend on various factors including species type (Akoya pearls being one example), water quality, temperature conditions during growth period etc.. After several years of meticulous care and nurturing within these protected waterscapes ,the cultivated pearls are harvested.
Once harvested from their mollusk hosts,the pearls undergo rigorous sorting processes based on various criteria including size,color,luster,and overall surface condition.The finest-quality pearls, known as gem-grade pearls, are selected for high-end jewelry pieces while lower-quality ones may be used in costume jewelry or other less expensive accessories.
